Care-home Wi-Fi: Segment networks by need, not a rigid four-VLAN recipe

Administrative systems, devices and guest networks need different access. Plan and test controlled communication without disrupting care.

Contexto y fuentes

BSI NET.1.1 addresses planned network architecture and segmentation. Map purposes, protection needs and necessary connections rather than allowing all devices to communicate freely. [1]

The BSI ransomware catalogue explains that segmentation can limit an attack's reach. It is not complete prevention: permitted transitions and administrative access must actually be controlled. [2]

A VLAN is one mechanism, not a complete policy. Include DNS, time services, maintenance and necessary supplier connections in the design. [1]

Alcance y límites

No universal requirement for exactly four VLANs, one Wi-Fi standard or a firewall brand is asserted. Lack of segmentation does not automatically establish personal liability.

Explicación sencilla

Fictional example: A facility isolates resident devices and permits only necessary call-system connections. Acceptance testing checks both restricted access and reliable alarm delivery.

Recomendaciones prácticas

Our recommendation: Inventory devices and communication needs, group by function and justify each transition. Test allowed and prohibited connections using authorised devices.

Plan changes with rollback to avoid disrupting alarms or medical functions. Record exceptions and review new equipment and supplier access. Segmentation is continuing operational work, not simply naming four wireless networks.
