Emergency dashboards: Prioritise provenance and freshness over real-time promises

Interfaces can support emergency handover. FHIR alone does not guarantee access control, current information or correct patient matching.

Editorial review:

Background & source findings

FHIR provides a standard model for healthcare exchange. Its Security and Privacy module describes building blocks, but implementations still require appropriate safeguards. Using the format alone is not a secure complete deployment. [1]

Provenance can represent information about data origins and changes. A handover should distinguish who supplied information, when it was recorded and what has been clinically confirmed. A technical timestamp is not automatic evidence of clinical freshness. [2]

Emergency processing still needs an appropriate purpose and basis. EDPB guidance distinguishes vital interests and healthcare-related conditions; an emergency button is not blanket suspension of data protection. [3]

Scope & limitations

No universal deployed dashboard, MIO product or right to write emergency data is asserted. A format standard cannot guarantee every ambulance connection or instant error-free exchange.

In plain language

Fictional example: A facility and emergency service test artificial handover records with visible source and update status, rather than presenting stale information as live.

Practical recommendations

Our recommendation: Agree required data, ownership, identity matching and units. Specify standard versions and profiles. Test authorisation, duplicates, interrupted transfer and stale information with synthetic cases.

Make missing data explicit and maintain a protected fallback and query route. Retest important functions after updates. Reliable, understandable handover matters more than displaying the largest possible dataset.
